What the product is

Shop2App is a no-code mobile app builder for Shopify stores. It turns a Shopify or Shopify Plus store into an iOS and Android shopping app that a brand can design, launch and manage without writing code. It is aimed at ecommerce brands and the small teams that run them, and the company's own mission statement is "to make mobile shopping easy and affordable so that e-commerce brands can improve the shopping experience for their customers."

The site is published by Shop2app, Inc. Its pages describe the product as a fit for "brands of any size" and show customer stories across several industries. One of them, Bully Max, is introduced as "a multi-million dollar pet food brand."

Shop2App is a store-to-app tool first. It also belongs to two neighboring groups: mobile app builders in general, and the Shopify ecosystem, because the app is built on top of an existing Shopify store and its apps. Both are covered below.

What you build and how

You build one thing here: a branded mobile storefront that mirrors your Shopify store. The site's feature page lists a "Drag and Drop Editor" as the first reason to choose the product, and the company says that "you can just drag and drop" to lay the app out. The home page frames the work in three verbs. Personalize, to deliver tailored content in the app. Engage, using rich media push notifications and personalized user journeys. Retain, with retention features meant to bring customers back.

The data layer is your Shopify store, not a separate database. The pricing page answers the obvious question directly: "Your app will always be in real-time sync with your Shopify store. Products, collections, pricing, inventory & discounts are all updated in real time." So you manage the catalog where you already do, and the app follows.

The feature menu names the building blocks you can switch on:

  • Subscriptions. An in-app subscriptions portal for customers.
  • Personalization. A personalized shopping experience for each customer.
  • Product detail page. A page the company describes as fast and easy for customers.
  • Deep links. Links that, in the company's words, accelerate the shopping journey by sending people to a specific place in the app.
  • Push notifications. The pricing page lists them in its features overview, and an FAQ says existing push notifications keep working after you move to Shop2App.
  • Memberships, local delivery and upsells. All three appear in the same features overview.
  • Customizations. The site says that if you are "looking for a feature you don't see on the app," the team can help, and the Tapcart comparison page adds that brands can request specific coding.

The wholesale feature gets its own page, which makes it the most detailed part of the product on the pages held. It is described as "an exclusive wholesale app" built for B2B customers, and its first listed capability is customer-specific pricing, so pricing can be customized for individual B2B customers "based on their needs and volumes." A merchant that sells to both consumers and trade buyers can read this as a way to serve each group in a mobile app made for it.

Publishing is handled with you rather than left to you. The pricing FAQ says the team will help "end-to-end in designing the app and launching it to both the App Store and Google Play Store." On developers, the answer is "Nope! Our team will help you set it all up. You don't need a developer at all to begin with," though customizations remain available if you need them.

Integrations come in two kinds. The home page and the pricing FAQ name Klaviyo, Recharge and Yotpo, and the home page adds Gorgias, as platforms that Shop2App connects with. The integration page adds analytics tools. Mixpanel is described as letting merchants track and analyze user activity on a Shopify store. AppsFlyer is described as a mobile measurement and marketing analytics platform. UXCam is described as a mobile app analytics platform for understanding user behavior. The page also says merchants can integrate their existing Shopify apps into the mobile app.

What the shopper sees is an iOS and Android app that carries the same products and discounts as the store.

The evidence from the pages

Pricing is the one place where the company is brief. The title of the features page reads "plans start $149/month." The pages held do not name individual plans, list what each tier includes, or state a free plan or a free trial. The pricing FAQ describes the model as "fair and transparent pricing with no unexpected price hikes" and says "You'll know exactly what you're paying for." If you need a plan-by-plan comparison, the site points you to a free demo, since "Book a Free Demo" is the call to action in its navigation.

The timeline is stated in numbers. Per the pricing FAQ, "It will take 1 - 5 hours to set up the preview app." After that, "it will take a few days to 2 weeks to get approved in the Google/Apple stores." The comparison page for migrating from Tapcart gives a shorter figure for the first step: 1 - 2 hours for the preview app, then "around a week to complete migration," with the Shop2App team handling the whole process. That comparison page says existing push notifications "will continue to work" after a move.

The company's scale claims sit on the about page. It lists "$50m+" in transactions processed and "300k+" orders. The page states these as the company's own figures and does not say over what period or for which merchants.

The features page makes its headline claim in one sentence: "With a fabulous mobile app, you can increase engagement and conversion up to 10x for your Shopify store." That is a marketing claim of the company, and the page does not publish the study behind it.

On the Shopify Plus question the FAQ is plain: "Can my Shopify Plus Store be converted to an Android and iOS app? Yes Shop2app does exactly that!"

The pages held state no security certifications, compliance standards or hosting regions. They do not mention an open-source license or any option to export app code. Support is a help center plus the team that assists with setup and launch.

Who it suits and who it does not

Shop2App suits a Shopify merchant, including a Shopify Plus merchant, who wants a branded app in the stores without hiring a developer or an agency. The wording of the site leans on a hands-on team as much as on the editor, which fits a small ecommerce team that would rather hand off the App Store and Google Play steps than learn them. It also suits brands whose revenue depends on subscriptions or on wholesale accounts, since both have their own features, and brands already running Klaviyo, Recharge, Yotpo or Gorgias that want those tools to carry over.

It is a less natural fit in three cases. First, the product is built around Shopify, so a store on another platform should look elsewhere. Second, the price starts at $149 a month and the pages do not detail the tiers, so a founder testing an idea on a tight budget will want a quote before committing. Third, the pages do not describe code export or self-hosting, so a team that wants to own the app's source should ask about it before starting.

One more point is worth weighing. The no-code editor covers the standard shopping experience, and anything beyond it goes through the company's team as a customization request. That is a reasonable trade for a merchant who wants a finished app quickly, and a constraint for a team that wants to build every screen itself.
