What it is

ShiftStack, also written ShiftStackApp, is an AI website builder. You describe the site you want in plain English and the AI generates the code, which then deploys to a server you control rather than the vendor's. Its home page puts it as "Your website, built in 60 seconds. The AI website builder that deploys to your server, not ours. Own your code, your data, your future." It's written for solo founders, freelancers, agencies and small businesses who want a site quickly and want to keep the source. The pages we hold don't say where the company is based.

What you build and how

The editor is a prompt. The home page lays out 3 steps. First, "Describe your website": type what you want in plain English, covering business type, colors, features and content. Second, "AI builds it instantly": ShiftStack AI generates a complete, mobile-responsive website in under 60 seconds, and you can preview it live before deploying. Third, "Deploy live with one click": the platform pushes your code to GitHub and deploys it on your server, and the page says the site is online in 30 seconds. A demo on the page shows a build log reading "12 files generated", and a "Try the AI Builder Right Now" box lets you describe a site without an account, with Restaurant, Gym, Portfolio and SaaS examples. The page calls that a simulation of the build.

AI assistance beyond the first draft. The company's blog posts describe the AI as more than a template picker. One says it keeps assisting as you refine the site, suggesting improvements, optimizing for mobile and helping you write content, and another says the AI can generate placeholder content such as headlines, product descriptions and about pages. Treat those as the vendor's description of its own feature.

Templates and design. The page lists a Template Library with "10+ professional templates for restaurants, gyms, portfolios, SaaS, weddings and more", all AI-customizable. Sample sites shown on the page include a portfolio site with a project gallery, testimonials and a contact form, and a gym site with membership plans and trainer bios. There is no separate drag-and-drop canvas on the page we hold, though the company's blog mentions drag-and-drop editors and AI-assisted design as what platforms like ShiftStack offer. Design control is through your description and then the code itself.

Code ownership and hosting. This is the core of the pitch. The page says "Every line of HTML, CSS, and JS belongs to you. Push to your own GitHub repo. Modify, export, or host anywhere." Your websites "live on your own Coolify server, not ours", and the company says it "literally cannot take them down or lock you out." The deploy section says "Deploy to any server, any cloud, any host. Not locked into our infrastructure." So the platform generates and deploys, and you operate the server. That is a very different bargain from a hosted builder: no vendor lock-in on the site, but you carry the hosting.

Domains. The page says you can connect your own domain and get automatic SSL via Let's Encrypt, "included on Starter plans and above."

Pricing logic against other AI builders. Under "Why switch from Bolt / Base44?" the page says "Other AI builders generate code. We give you ownership." It states Bolt charges per token and Base44 limits monthly builds, while ShiftStack has "No monthly credit limits": "One flat monthly price. No per-generation fees, no token limits, no credit packs. One price covers everything, unlimited builds, unlimited deployments."

Integrations and AI features. The pages don't list third-party integrations, an API or an app store. The AI is the product's single large feature, powered per the page header by "ShiftStack AI."

What the end user sees. A visitor gets an ordinary website served from your own infrastructure. The editor, as far as the page shows, is the AI builder and your own code editor.

The evidence from the pages

Plans. The home page prints a Free plan at "$0 forever", described as "Perfect for trying out ShiftStackApp", with 2 projects, 1 deployment per project, the AI website builder, basic templates and community support. A comparison widget says the Pro plan costs $49 a month, and a banner advertises 50% off the Pro plan with a code for a limited time. The page text we hold doesn't show the Starter price or the full list of paid features, so check the pricing section before budgeting. A "No credit card required" note appears next to the free start button, and "Cancel anytime" appears among the claims.

Customer claims. The home page says "Join 2,400+ businesses building with ShiftStack AI Builder". That is a company claim, not an audited figure. A testimonial from James O'Brien, Co-founder of FlowDesk, says analytics were wired up "before our coffee got cold", that they "Closed our first 12 signups within 24 hours", and calls it an unfair advantage for solo founders. The page also invites visitors to submit a review that appears after approval.

Savings calculator. A slider block lets you enter sites per month, revenue per site, hours per site and an hourly rate to estimate monthly savings versus $49 a month for Pro. The results depend entirely on your inputs, so they are an illustration rather than a measured outcome.

Security and compliance. The pages hold no compliance certifications. The company's data claim is that your data stays on your server.

Free to start. The blog repeats the line "Build and deploy your first website in 60 seconds, free", and describes the product as free to get started, with upgrades as you grow.

Who it suits and who it does not

ShiftStack suits a solo founder or freelancer who wants a landing page, portfolio or small business site in minutes and wants the files in their own GitHub repo. It suits an agency that would rather hand a client the code and a server than a login to someone else's builder. A developer comfortable with Coolify or a similar host gets an escape hatch built in, since the output is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

It is a weaker fit for a team that doesn't want to run a server or touch GitHub, because deployment lands on infrastructure you manage. The pages describe generated websites and don't mention a built-in database, user logins, payments or a visual CMS, so a project that needs those will need extra work around the generated code. The free plan's limit of 2 projects is a hard ceiling for anyone building several sites before paying. And because the pitch leans on describing a site in words, results depend on how clearly you can say what you want.
