What SurveyHero is

SurveyHero is an online survey builder for people who need answers rather than an app: customer feedback, employee surveys, course evaluations, public opinion polls and research questionnaires. The company describes it as a free survey builder "trusted for anonymous surveys, customer feedback, and team collaboration - no coding required", and says it has been trusted by over 3 million users worldwide since 2007, from startups and educators to research teams and global brands. The pages do not name a company location.

It sits in the forms category because that is the job: you build a questionnaire, send it out, and read the results. There's no app canvas or database to design. The depth is in the survey features, which is where this entry spends its time.

What you build and how

You build in a survey editor that offers a range of question types. The examples page links to a sample survey that contains every currently available question type, and suggests opening it on a smartphone to see how it behaves on a small screen. Surveys are automatically mobile optimized, and the home page says participants can answer on desktop computers, notebooks, tablets or smartphones.

Starting points come from the templates page, which describes ready-made surveys you can still edit to match your needs. The popular ones are Customer Satisfaction, Employee Satisfaction, Net Promoter Score (NPS), General Event Feedback, Website Feedback and Public Opinion, plus Social Issue Awareness and Community Impact surveys. A website and user experience group adds Website Usability, Mobile App Feedback, E-commerce Shopping Experience and Software User Satisfaction. An education group covers Course Evaluation, Teacher Evaluation, Student Satisfaction and School Parent Satisfaction.

Logic is where the paid plans earn their keep. The examples page explains that Skip Logic and Display Logic let you change a survey dynamically based on a participant's answers, so people only see the questions that apply to them. The home page lists skip logic among the advanced features that paid plans add, and the pricing page puts "Skip & Display logic (Branching)" on the Business plan.

Multilingual surveys follow a simple pattern. You write the survey in your main language, then add translations in any language you want. Results land in one place and can also be viewed per language. The pricing page lists creating multilingual surveys as a Business feature.

Sharing covers the usual routes. The home page says you can send a link by email, post it to social networks, share a QR code or embed the survey in your own website, and the examples page says embedding takes a short snippet of code. For privacy-sensitive work there's an "Anonymous Survey" setting: when you switch it on, the company says SurveyHero removes IP addresses, email addresses and other identifying data, and the survey displays an official anonymity guarantee to reassure participants.

Reading the results is built in. Responses show up in real time. You can open each response one by one, or look at grouped data through automatic diagrams and summaries, with different chart types and filters. The examples page describes a tabulated report you can share via a link, export as a PDF with charts, or send to Excel or CSV. The home page FAQ is more specific on cost: viewing and analyzing results in the dashboard is included, while exporting to Excel, CSV or PDF is a paid-plan feature.

For teams that want to connect surveys to other systems, the pricing comparison lists a Developer API and webhooks ("Let us send you new responses via POST"), plus survey redirection and "Integrations via API" among the Business features. The pages name no ready-made connectors for specific apps, so expect to do that connection through the API or webhooks.

Plans, pricing and limits

Start with what's free. The Basic plan has no limit on how many surveys you run, how many questions you include, or how many responses you collect. The catch is time: each survey "remains open for up to 30 days after receiving its first response", and the company says you can upgrade to keep surveys open longer.

The paid plans are priced in Swiss francs. The Business plan is CHF 53 a month billed CHF 636 annually, or CHF 69 month-to-month. It includes 3 user accounts, all advanced features, skip and display logic, multilingual surveys, removal of SurveyHero branding, survey redirection, integrations via API and priority customer support. The description for Business reads "All from Professional, plus", so a Professional tier sits below it.

Enterprise is described as a "white-label product with no restrictions whatsoever, including top level support". It costs CHF 140 a month billed CHF 1,680 annually, or CHF 295 month-to-month, builds on Business, and includes 5 user accounts. The home page also lists white-label hosting among what the paid plans add.

Discounts are generous. Students get a Student Account described as 100% free with full access to create unlimited surveys. Educators, faculty members and researchers get a 50% educational discount when upgrading to a paid plan, and nonprofits get 50% off all yearly plans. You can pay by credit card (MasterCard, VISA and American Express), PayPal or bank transfer by invoice, with monthly and yearly options.

The pricing FAQ says subscriptions can be canceled within your account at any time. The account then stays on the purchased plan until the regular expiry, drops back to the free Basic plan, and no further charges are made.

On compliance, the company says: "SurveyHero is fully GDPR compliant. All data is processed and stored securely in accordance with European privacy standards." The pages name no other certifications and no hosting regions.

Who it suits and who it does not

SurveyHero suits researchers, students, teachers and small organizations that run surveys for a purpose and want to start for nothing: unlimited questions and responses mean a classroom project or a one-off customer poll costs nothing. It's also a reasonable fit for a team that needs anonymous responses with a visible guarantee, or surveys in several languages with results split by language.

The caveats are specific. A free survey closes 30 days after its first response, so long-running tracking needs a paid plan. Exporting to Excel, CSV or PDF is paid-only. Skip and display logic, branding removal and multilingual surveys are paid too, and Business plans include 3 user accounts, so a larger team will look at Enterprise. This is a survey tool, not a general app or workflow builder, and the published pages show no connector list for other business apps.
