What SocialEngine is
SocialEngine is a social networking website builder and community platform. Its site says it is designed for "businesses, creators, entrepreneurs, organizations, and enterprises who want to build and grow an online community under their own brand". The reader it fits is someone who wants a community they own and host or have hosted for them, with member profiles, feeds, groups, chat, events and paid memberships, rather than a group inside a larger social app. It comes in 2 forms. The self-hosted version is a PHP community script you run yourself, and the cloud version is hosted by the company.
What you build and how
You build a social network: a site where members have profiles, post to activity feeds, join groups, message each other and attend events, with your branding on all of it. The site's FAQ describes the result as a community "with member profiles, activity feeds, groups, events, chat, subscriptions, and other community features". The company's no-code guide for creating a social site (dated August 5, 2025) lists the same core pieces as user profiles and activity feeds, messaging and chat, and groups and forums, and describes drag and drop builders, templates and customization of profiles, chat, groups and events without a developer.
Member experience. The homepage lists what members get. Instant messaging and group chats let people talk in real time. Live streaming and interactive stories make sharing "more immediate". Members can build and join dedicated groups, "exchange ideas, share content", and form connections around shared interests. The site also says members can generate posts and images with AI "without leaving your community".
Events. Events are a named feature: you can create, discover, promote and manage events that bring people together "online and offline".
Mobile apps. SocialEngine says it supports branded native iOS and Android apps, so members get the community on their phones under your brand. A mobile app builder page describes a launch of a new Flutter-based app for iOS and Android that brings "a more unified, modern, and scalable mobile experience" to SocialEngine communities. The page frames the choice this way: building your own community app from scratch means planning, designing, developing, testing and maintaining everything, while starting from SocialEngine gives you existing community functionality (profiles, feeds, messaging, groups, events, notifications) plus supported mobile capabilities, which you configure and customize around your brand. It adds that maintenance responsibilities "depend on your deployment and selected solution".
Monetization. The homepage says you can generate revenue through memberships, subscriptions, paid content and gamification. Its FAQ names more models: paid memberships, subscriptions, marketplaces, virtual credits and advertising, "depending on your platform configuration". For payment gateways the no-code guide points to an Authorize.net payment plugin and a cryptocurrency payment gateway plugin.
Email and admin. You can run targeted email campaigns to members to bring them back to the platform. An admin dashboard covers users, content, configuration, subscriptions, moderation and platform operations.
Plugins and customization. The homepage describes a growing ecosystem of plugins for adding features, and the mobile page says the platform extends "through available apps, plugins, integrations, and customization". The no-code guide also names business listings and event plugins as examples. For the cloud version, the FAQ says it can be customized to your needs and branding, and that if you want custom design work, third-party integrations or modifications, the company's developers will discuss it with you through support.
Courses, marketplaces and more. The homepage lists plugin areas beyond the social core. Courses come with unlimited courses, lessons and quizzes, interactive classrooms, paid courses and progress tracking. A marketplace lets members run stores with order, inventory, shipping and coupon management. There are also directories with custom listing types and fields, crowdfunding campaigns that collect donations, business pages with maps and reviews, forums with role-based moderator tools, contests with voting, and a credits system that rewards activity. Themes (Inspira, Harmony, Vertical and a LinkedIn-style theme), clone packages modeled on familiar social apps and ready-made solutions for niches such as real estate and hotels give a faster start. For AI beyond post and image generation, the company offers custom work on content moderation, automation and AI agents.
Hosting and ownership. The self-hosted route is the escape hatch. The FAQ says that with self-hosting "you own your content, user data, and the custom code you create", and it calls SocialEngine a PHP community script that lets businesses and developers build custom community sites with ownership of their source code and hosting environment. The cloud route is pitched as a faster launch where the company handles hosting. You can move in either direction. Self-hosted to cloud means contacting support, which guides the migration. Cloud to self-hosted means buying a self-hosted license from the plans and then either migrating yourself or asking the company to do it.
What the pages say about plans, scale and support
The pricing menu splits the offer in two: Self hosted, pitched as owning your platform "with complete control", and Cloud, where the company handles hosting. The homepage offers a "14 Days Free Trial" and a live demo, but the pages print no plan prices, user limits or storage limits, so cost is quoted on the pricing pages themselves. Self-hosting needs a purchased license, and the menu also lists managed VPS hosting and support sold as annual or monthly maintenance.
The company's scale claims are specific. The homepage says SocialEngine is "Trusted by 10,000+ customers across 120+ countries" and has been trusted by communities "Since 2007". A stats strip lists 18+ years of innovation, 2K+ active communities, a 58% customer renewal rate and 100+ plugins and extensions, and the site says it won the CMS Critic award for best social network software in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Customer reviews on the homepage, all dated January 21, 2026, praise how fast a community goes live and the support team.
Support runs through the support team for migrations and customization, a knowledge base and learning center, a community forum, presale FAQs and a WhatsApp chat link. The homepage calls the product "an all-in-one white label community platform", and the pages name no compliance certification or hosting region.
Who it suits and who it does not
SocialEngine suits a business, creator or organization that wants a branded, owned social network where members talk to each other, with profiles, groups, events and chat built in, and revenue from memberships, subscriptions or paid content. It is a good match when you want the choice of self-hosting. A team with developer time can own the source and the data. A team without it can start on the cloud version and migrate later, which the FAQ says is possible in both directions.
It asks more of you than a simple membership tool. The self-hosted version is a PHP script you install and maintain, and the mobile page itself says maintenance responsibilities depend on your deployment. Major customization is a developer or support conversation rather than a settings page, and the page says to contact support for custom design enhancements or integrations. If your main product is a course or a newsletter with a simple paywall, a network with feeds, groups and live streaming is more than you need. Because the pages print no prices, budgeting starts with the 14-day trial and the plans pages.
