What it is
Memberful is a paid-membership platform for creators, publishers and communities. The company's site says it helps them "launch beautiful paid memberships without sacrificing ownership", and the homepage pitch is "Sell subscriptions, share content, and connect with your audience, all on your own website or app." It suits a writer, podcaster, media company or community leader who wants recurring revenue without handing the audience to a marketplace. Memberful's about page says it powers over 1 million members and describes the product as a partnership between its team and yours. The pages don't give a company location.
What you build and how
You build a membership business: plans, a checkout, protected content and a place for members to sign in. Memberful doesn't try to be your whole site, and it gives you three ways to put one in front of customers.
Websites. There is a built-in website builder, and the site says Memberful "makes it easier than ever to create a website that's unique to you and your members." With it come a landing page builder, a branded pricing page, custom domains, custom themes and branding, dynamic paywalls and integrated comments. If you already have a site, the Memberful WordPress plugin protects content server-side for members only. The homepage lists the options for this as a WordPress plugin for existing sites, a website builder for new sites and a simple API for custom sites. The product page also lists a custom app API.
Plans and checkout. Plans can be monthly, annual or weekly, pay what you want, or custom recurring intervals, and the pricing page also lists one-time payments, group plans, free registration, free and paid trials and gift purchases. Checkout is described as fast and powerful, with Apple Pay and Google Pay, coupons and discounts, custom fields, 15 language translations and global tax collection. Members sign in with a password or a sign-in link.
Content. The pricing page lists support for podcasts, newsletters, communities, courses and downloads. Newsletters go out with plan-specific content, you can schedule sends and host your posts online with one click. If you already produce a podcast, you can build a private feed for members instead of hosting one somewhere else. The communities option connects through integrations, and the site names Discord and Discourse.
Running the business. The homepage lists subscriptions and refunds, unlimited staff accounts, private notes and acquisition insights. The creators page describes an analytics dashboard with MRR, churn, upgrades and renewals, plus renewal reminders and failed-payment recovery that protect recurring revenue. Other tools include a built-in referral program, automated retention discounts, cancellation surveys, custom transactional emails, member rewards and automated loyalty programs, and discounts and gifting.
Integrations. The site says Memberful connects natively with WordPress, Discord, Mailchimp and Kit, with more listed under email service provider and analytics integrations, Discord, Discourse, affiliate and LMS integrations, API, webhooks and custom apps, and Zapier and other no-code tools.
Launch help. The creators page says Memberful helps you go live in days, with guided onboarding, human support, built-in checkout and email, and launch playbooks. If you're migrating an existing membership, the homepage says a dedicated team will personally handle the setup.
What the pages state about plans and cost
The pricing page has two plans.
- Standard is $49 a month plus a 4.9% transaction fee. The page says it gives you access to everything Memberful has to offer for one monthly price.
- Enterprise is custom pricing, with dedicated support, custom volume-based pricing, premium services and success management, and custom migration and implementation support.
The page says you can try Memberful for free "for as long as you like", and that you're only charged when you go live and start accepting payments. It also promises "no surprises, no gotchas". Every plan includes checkout, subscriptions of any kind, member management, support for all content types, the website and newsletter builder and managed integrations such as WordPress, Mailchimp, Discord and Kit. The page lists no per-member limit, content cap or support tiers beyond Standard and Enterprise.
For social proof, the homepage links a case study titled "How Molly Baz Built an Exclusive Recipe Membership Community", and quotes Rachel at Punchbowl News, who says the team enabled them to scale the subscription side of their business, and Jesse at Team Flower, who says Memberful handles the difficult part of online memberships without getting in the way. These are testimonials the company chose to publish. The pages say the company has been around long enough to know you can't growth hack your way to a great membership.
Memberful's blog gives some context on what competing writer platforms charge. It says Substack takes a 10% fee on each transaction of paid subscriptions, with Stripe adding 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction, and that Medium costs $5 a month or $50 a year for unlimited reading. That's the company's description of other platforms, not a quote from them.
The pages publish no compliance certifications, uptime figures or hosting regions.
Who it suits and who it does not
Memberful suits anyone who already has an audience and wants to charge for it on their own terms: a newsletter writer, a podcast with a paid feed, a publisher with a paywall, a teacher with a course or a community with dues. A WordPress site owner can add gated content through the plugin, while someone with no site can use the website builder. Plans for a team or group are supported, and unlimited staff accounts help a small editorial or support team. The tooling for retention (failed-payment recovery, retention discounts, cancellation surveys) matters most once a membership has paying customers.
Several limits are worth weighing. The cost is a $49 monthly fee plus 4.9% of what you sell on Standard, which is a lot for a hobby community with only a handful of paying members. Community features come mostly through integrations such as Discord and Discourse, so a member forum or chat has to run somewhere else. Memberful is a membership and billing layer, not a general no-code app builder, and the pages describe no custom data model or workflow builder beyond the API, webhooks and Zapier. The pages publish only one self-serve plan and a custom Enterprise tier, so a mid-sized organization needing volume pricing will have to talk to the team.
