What Workato is
Workato is an enterprise integration platform as a service (iPaaS) that has grown into what the company calls "a control and execution platform" for AI. The site's headline reads "The Platform to Govern & Scale Enterprise AI", and the company says it is built on the #1 iPaaS. It is aimed at IT and enterprise teams that need many builders, many apps and many agents to run under shared rules: access, approvals, audit and cost controls. The home pages do not state where the company is based or when it was founded. They list regional site versions for Europe, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Australia and Israel.
What you build and how
The site splits the product into 2 halves. The Control Plane governs. The Execution Plane does the work. In the company's words, "A gateway governs access, but can't do the work. A script does the work, but no one governs it."
Integrations and workflows. The Execution Plane is the iPaaS: an orchestration engine ("Work runs reliably, exactly once, every time"), event triggers so a workflow acts "the moment your business changes", and connectivity. One home page says the platform connects to 17,000+ apps, APIs, databases, files and MCP servers with no custom infrastructure. The other says 14,000+ applications. Named examples on the pages include Salesforce, Slack, Workday, NetSuite, ServiceNow and Marketo. The product menu also lists Modern iPaaS, Universal Connectivity, API Management, Data Orchestration, Data Hub and MDM, B2B and EDI, Intelligent Document Processing and Robotic Process Automation. The site describes the runtime as one elastic runtime that needs no infrastructure management from you. For workflow automation buyers, the use cases it lists are Enterprise iPaaS, Order-to-Cash, Employee Onboarding, Product-Led Sales and Embedded Integrations. A separate Embedded iPaaS offering is pitched at companies that want to "transform your product with embedded integrations".
Agents and bots. For chatbot and agent builders, the Agentic section lists Agent Studio, Agent Orchestration, Agents (also called Genies), AI Workflows and Enterprise Search, with "Otto by Workato" shown under the embedded offering. The company describes the goal as "Discover, build, deploy, and operate multi-agent solutions", and says you can run any agent, whether you buy it, build it or bring it, on one execution runtime. Its comparison table lists multi-agent orchestration, including third-party agents and A2A, as a capability. Prebuilt agent solutions are organized by team: Sales, IT, Marketing, HR and Recruiting, Customer Experience and Support. The product list also names Workflow Bots. These are agents and bots that act on business systems, not a website chat widget builder, so read this membership as an enterprise agent platform.
MCP. The site gives MCP a section of its own. It lists App and Data MCP Servers, an MCP Gateway, Enterprise MCP and "composable MCP servers", described as a way for "Agents [to] call proven processes, not raw tools". An Enterprise MCP for SaaS option appears under the embedded offering.
Governance. The Control Plane list is specific: verified user access and RBAC ("Agents act only as the authorized user"), audit and activity logs, data masking and residency, guardrails and approvals ("A person signs off on consequential actions"), and an AI gateway and routing layer to "control which models each team can use". The company also describes "Token Economics", which it says turns unpredictable AI spend into a governed cost through Enterprise Skills, Enterprise MCP and AI gateways. On models, it promises routing across any model, open source, closed source or fine-tuned small language models, with no vendor lock-in.
Context and the assistant. A Context Graph is described as complete enterprise context across data, apps and process, with better decisions at reduced token costs. AIRO, marked "new", is described as a multi-agent system that understands your goals and moves you "from intent to impact". The site says it acts as a data scientist that analyzes outcomes and responds when things go wrong, an architect that designs solutions with best practices, an "FDE" that builds production-grade agents, MCPs, workflows and integrations, and an IT Ops engineer that reads logs and resolves issues. The company adds that it works wherever you work: Claude, Codex, Cursor and Workato itself.
Low-code apps. Low-Code Apps appears in the platform menu among the Execution Plane products. The pages say nothing more about how those apps are designed, so the editor's look and the hosting of finished apps are unknown from the pages.
Evidence from the product's pages
- Scale claims: "Trusted by over 50% of the Fortune 500". The company says it is the control and execution plane behind AI agents for over 100,000 employees across hundreds of platforms, with 100M+ tasks automated per month and 4x faster delivery.
- Customer stories on the home page: "100M+ tasks automated with Workato", and "99.95% reduction in loan approval time". A quote from Luke Bradley, Head of Architecture at VOIS, says "Workato is the glue that connects VOIS systems, processes, and people across Digital & IT as we drive the next chapter in Vodafone's transformation." Another, from Angela Stewart, VP of Enterprise Solutions, reads "Workato is leading the charge in MCP, turning systems, data, and processes into AI-ready services."
- Analyst and review claims: 8x a Leader and 3x Furthest in Vision in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Integration Platform as a Service, a Forbes Cloud 100 Honoree listing, inclusion in the Forrester Wave for Integration Platforms as a Service, Q3 2025, and Gartner Voice of the Customer 2026. User ratings shown are 4.9 on Gartner Peer Insights and 4.7 on G2. The page carries Gartner's own disclaimer that it does not endorse any vendor.
- Connectivity: 17,000+ apps on one page and 14,000+ on the other.
- Support and learning: the comparison row for "Enterprise Support" lists SLAs, 24/7 product support, escalation and certifications. The footer links a Trust Center, Documentation, Training, Certification, Customer Success, a Workato Conference, a Marketplace, an Integration Library and Office Hours.
- Pricing: the home pages publish no prices, plan names or usage limits. The site links a Pricing page and a "Predictable Pricing Commitment", and offers both "Get a trial" and "Talk to sales". Trial length and free-plan terms are not stated.
- Compliance: the pages name no security or compliance standard. They mention data masking, residency and a Trust Center.
Who it suits and who it does not
Workato fits IT and integration teams at large organizations that already have dozens of systems and a growing number of AI agents, and want one place for identity, approvals, audit and model choice. The industries it lists are Retail and CPG, Financial Services, Healthcare, Insurance, Manufacturing and Logistics, and Media and Technology. The company's pitch, "You can't scale AI on chaos", is aimed at the team that has to answer for what every agent did.
It also suits software companies that want to ship integrations inside their own product, which is what the embedded offering is for. Developers get an escape hatch through MCP servers and APIs, though the pages do not describe a code editor, so check that with the company.
The caveats are scope and cost transparency. This is a platform for managed, multi-team rollouts, and the home pages give no price to budget against. Someone who wants a weekend automation, a simple chatbot for a website or a first no-code app will find the product list long and the sales-led trial path more than they need. The pages also give 2 different connector counts, so confirm the apps you depend on before you commit.
