Retool assembles internal apps from prebuilt components, tables, forms, charts, buttons, wired directly to queries against your existing databases and APIs. You can write raw SQL or JavaScript inside a query step whenever the visual options run out, which is the opposite approach from a pure drag-and-drop builder and the reason so many engineering teams standardize on it for admin panels, support tools, and ops dashboards.
Pricing is per user per month, split between builders and end users, so a tool used by five support agents costs far less than one rolled out company-wide, and that per-seat model can get expensive fast at real headcount. Apps live in Retool’s own format with no export to a standalone codebase, though the self-hosted option keeps your data and app definitions inside your own infrastructure. The ceiling is that Retool assumes SQL and API comfort, so a fully non-technical team will find the learning curve steeper than something like Softr. It fits engineering and ops teams building internal tools where a developer sets it up and others use it day to day.
