What OutSystems is

OutSystems calls itself an agentic systems platform and an AI development platform that combines a low-code foundation with AI capabilities. It is built for enterprise IT and development teams that need custom applications and AI agents with governance, security and lifecycle management included. The company says it was founded with a mission to help enterprise development teams of any size or skill set deliver custom applications on time and within budget, and its site calls OutSystems "the #1 low-code platform," recognized "10x as a Leader." The home page sums up the current offer as "an open platform for building, orchestrating, and governing agentic systems."

What you build and how

The foundation is visual, model-driven development with pre-built reusable building blocks. The company says this is now joined by AI assistance across the software development lifecycle, so teams can build, manage and scale mission-critical solutions "10x faster than standard code" without giving up security, governance or performance. The company describes a unified architecture spanning apps, data and logic.

Three named pieces carry the AI side. OutSystems Mentor is described as an AI partner for app generation, delivery and monitoring. The company also describes a native coding agent: you build an application using natural language, then visually inspect, refine and evolve every component in the IDE, which the company says preserves quality, security and architectural integrity. Agent Workbench is the tool for creating custom AI agents for core business processes, with built-in guardrails, evaluations and monitoring, and the ability to swap language models to manage cost and performance. The FAQ says these agents are "deeply integrated into their business processes and applications," which is how OutSystems covers the agent and chatbot side: agents that act inside processes and apps, with a workflow layer that can "automate and orchestrate human-agent handoffs." The platform menu groups the offer as Agentic Systems Engineering ("Build with Mentor or any agentic coding tool"), Agentic Enterprise Orchestration ("Coordinate agents and apps with Agent Workbench") and Agentic Industry Solutions, described as productized industry solutions.

The homepage frames the work in three directions. "Build your vision, with your team" is about custom AI and agentic solutions that perform to your exact specifications, with enterprise security and dependability built in. "Operational efficiency without the back-end headaches" is about automating complex internal workflows and processes with AI apps and agents that integrate with existing core systems and data, without the rigid limitations of off-the-shelf solutions. The third is customer-facing digital experiences, which is where the portal use cases below come in. The company's FAQ describes the day-to-day loop as building and iterating quickly with visual development, connecting to your existing systems and data, and managing everything in one place. Agent Workbench agents can be built and coordinated for any department, workflow or data source.

Data and integration are covered by two named layers. Data Fabric is "the virtual data layer to power all your AI apps and agents." Enterprise integration is described as integrating with any system, app and AI model, and the company says deep enterprise integrations are among the capabilities that carried over from its low-code years. Security and compliance are summarized as "your enterprise policies and governance built into every app and agent." The integration menu names a Salesforce integration among its core-system use cases.

For the finished product, the use case list is specific. External apps include citizen portals, mobile banking portals, insurance portals, virtual care portals, customer account creation portals and customer self-service portals. Core systems include digital lending systems, claims management systems and field service systems. Internal apps include employee self-service, internal case management, IT service management and performance management. The company adds that you can build anything on the platform, but most customers focus on enterprise-ready apps and agents. It also says OutSystems is more than an app generator, because it supports customizing, extending and continuously evolving apps after the first version, with full lifecycle management, DevOps and cloud deployment options.

The homepage also promotes a live session on the OutSystems Forge, covering reusable assets, troubleshooting components and using AI agents for faster delivery. The company argues you get the efficiency of off-the-shelf software "without the risk of costly lock-in."

Free start, customers and analyst standing

The home page offers "Start free" and "Get started today for free" next to "Schedule demo" and an invitation to "Discuss plans with a platform specialist." The site menu links a Pricing page, an Evaluation Guide and Application Templates.

Customer stories are the main proof, all as the company tells them. HEINEKEN set out to save one million hours by automating processes and digitizing the company, using a federated app development model, and the page shows "1M+ hours saved." Bosch built an AIoT platform for the shop floor, described as one of the first Industry 5.0 applications. The home page says ramping up a team for a new assembly line took Bosch 4 weeks before the platform and now takes 4 days. Zurich Insurance launched a new digital distribution framework, and the company says it "doubled their monthly policy sales." Quotes from customers include "We now create apps as living organisms. As the business needs evolve, so do they," and "We can rewrite any legacy app at a significantly lower cost and deliver more value to the business than we would with .NET or Java."

On analyst standing, one version of the home page says Gartner names OutSystems a Leader in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for AI-Augmented Low-Code Application Platforms, positioned furthest for Completeness of Vision. Another lists the Gartner Magic Quadrant 2025 for Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms, with OutSystems "recognized as a 9x Leader," a Leader placement in the 2025 Forrester Wave for Low-Code Platforms for professional developers, a Leader placement in the IDC MarketScape for worldwide low-code and no-code developer technologies, and "a Leader in 3 major G2 AI Categories."

Positioning is explicit. The FAQ says OutSystems is "purpose-built for large enterprises" and can handle complex integrations, high-performance workloads and enterprise-grade security requirements "while ensuring compliance with global standards," with DevOps, lifecycle management and cloud deployment options. A bank customer's development head is quoted planning to expand AI use "without needing to invest in specialized AI roles."

Who it suits and who it does not

OutSystems suits an enterprise that wants one governed place for custom apps and AI agents across many teams, particularly when apps must connect to existing core systems and data. A bank, an insurer or a care provider building portals, lending or claims systems fits the use case list, and a large manufacturer can follow the HEINEKEN and Bosch examples. An IT group that wants to scale AI agents with guardrails, evaluations and a way to change models for cost will find those features in Agent Workbench, and a team modernizing legacy applications is a stated audience.

It is a heavier choice for a solo founder or a small team that wants a landing page, a store or a quick prototype. The site is written for large enterprises and mission-critical systems, so a small project would use only a fraction of what the platform is built to govern. The free start is the way to judge the visual editor and Mentor before a conversation about plans.
