What it is

AskYourDatabase is an AI database chatbot and SQL assistant for teams who need to ask questions of their live databases without writing SQL. You connect a supported database and ask questions in natural language; the platform generates SQL queries, executes them, and returns results and charts. It runs in 2 forms: a Desktop app for analysts and operations teams on Windows or macOS, and a Website Chatbot that embeds database questions into a website or customer portal. A Dashboard Builder lets you create and share interactive dashboards by describing what you want to see.

What you build and how

Desktop app for analysis. Analysts and operations teams download the app to their computer and connect it directly to your database. You ask a question in a chat interface, inspect the generated SQL and query results, then ask follow-up questions or request a chart. The platform generates SQL from your natural-language prompt, executes the query against your database, and displays the results. You can add schema explanations and verified SQL examples, document business terms and KPI definitions to help the AI interpret your questions, and test answers against your own reports. The site says fine-grained user-level access control is supported, so you can ship the AI to your customers.

Website Chatbot for embedding. Configure a chatbot connected to approved data, then integrate the chat interface into your website or customer portal. The chatbot works the same way: end users ask questions and get answers from your database without leaving your product. You control database access by connecting an approved account limited to the tables or reporting views you want to expose. The hosted Website Chatbot stores encrypted database credentials and conversation records. Plan authentication and user-level data access before rollout; test that each user can retrieve only the records they're allowed to see.

Dashboard Builder. Create dashboards by describing what you want in plain English. Start with one reporting scope and a small number of components (the company's worked example asks for net order value, paid order count and average order value, a daily chart and a regional table). The AI generates the dashboard from your database structure and your description. Each dashboard can have multiple tabs (pages), which you customize independently. All previous dashboard versions are saved, so you can modify your design and roll back if needed. You can share dashboards with team members via direct link, embed them in your website using iframe code, set up access permissions, and monitor usage analytics. For reporting, the company recommends using a read-only database account and a staging database to validate queries before switching to production.

Schema and business context. The quality of AI-generated answers improves when you document your database. Add schema explanations (table relationships, column meanings, business context), verified SQL examples, and KPI definitions. You can also add descriptions for schemas, tables, and columns, plus any special data handling requirements. The AI uses this documentation to generate more accurate and meaningful dashboards and answers that align with your business needs.

Data operations. Dashboards support real-time create, read, update and delete (CRUD) operations on your data. Components include tables with sorting, filtering and pagination; charts and graphs (line, bar, pie); forms for data input; and custom metrics and KPIs. For write operations (forms or actions that change data), the platform can generate data-changing components, but read-only reporting is the recommended design pattern.

How it handles your data. The Desktop app keeps database credentials on your computer and connects locally. Questions and the response data needed to answer them can be sent through an AI gateway to a model provider, so the Desktop app is not offline; your computer needs database access. The Website Chatbot stores encrypted database credentials on the platform's servers. In both cases, a read-only database account with restricted access enforces permissions server-side; read-only prompts do not enforce database permissions, so permissions must live in the database itself. Local connections do not guarantee local AI processing: review the data flow for your configuration.

Security. To prevent the AI from generating incorrect SQL queries, build and validate your dashboard using a staging database with the same schema as production, then switch to production. Use a database account restricted to approved reporting data, review generated queries, and retest filters, empty results and permissions before sharing. A staging validation reduces risk but does not guarantee production behavior. The company treats private deployment as an enterprise discussion for organizations with hosting or data-handling requirements, and notes that hosting the application yourself can still involve external model API calls.

The evidence

The Desktop app serves analysts and operations teams on Windows or macOS. The Website Chatbot is for teams adding database questions to a website or customer portal. Both are separate products with separate plans. The platform supports "create, read, update and delete (CRUD) operations on your data" and "real-time connection to your database." Dashboard pages are created by describing what you want to see, and "The AI will generate the dashboard based on your database structure and description," and "all previous versions will be saved." Tables include sorting, filtering and pagination; components include charts, forms, custom metrics and KPIs. The documentation asks you to add schema context including "KPI definitions and calculations," "business meaning of tables and columns," "relationships between different tables," and "common metrics and their business context." The platform offers "fine grained user-level access control" and "user-level data access" for embedded chat. For reporting, use "a database account restricted to approved reporting data"; "a read-only prompt does not enforce database permissions." For write operations, "the builder can also generate data-changing components," but they must be verified separately and "database permissions must enforce your reporting-only policy." "Questions and necessary response data can reach a model provider through the AI gateway"; "local connections do not mean offline AI." "Private deployment is an enterprise discussion" for organizations with "hosting or data-handling requirements." Both the Desktop and Website Chatbot "do not require a ChatGPT subscription."

Who it suits and who it does not

Use AskYourDatabase if you have a team of analysts and operations staff asking repetitive questions of a SQL database, or if you want to embed data chat into your product without building an analytics system yourself. The platform is strongest for teams already comfortable with databases and comfortable restricting access server-side. Non-technical users can ask questions and get charts, but your operations team still needs to set up the database connection, document the schema, configure access control, and test user-level isolation. The pages describe natural-language question-answering and generated dashboards, and say nothing about pixel-level report design or branded report templates, so check that against your needs. Data security depends on your database configuration, not on AskYourDatabase alone; you cannot delegate access control to the platform. The service works best when you start with a clear reporting scope and a limited set of approved tables.
